MANILA, Philippines – Authorities have called on the public to participate in the national synchronized earthquake drill scheduled for Friday (June 28) at 2 p.m. as part of the government's efforts to prepare for the “big earthquake.”

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Monday that a newly activated Harmonized National Contingency Plan (HNCP) will be held to prepare the public in the event of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake caused by the movement of the West Valley Fault. , which will affect the Metro Manila area and the provinces near Central Luzon and Calabarzon.

The Civil Defense Office urged the public to join in the activity by ducking, covering and grabbing.

The HNCP mandates the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMC) from provinces outside Metro Manila to be ready to provide assistance in the event of a major earthquake.

The RDRRMC area assigned to the Northern Sector is of Ilocos, while the Cordillera Administrative Region is assigned to the Western Sector, Cagayan Valley to the Eastern Sector, and Bicol to the Southern Sector.

Under this scenario, RDRRMC assistance will reach the Metro Manila area and establish alternative emergency operations centers in the designated areas.

The main venue for this quarter's National Synchronized Earthquake Exercise will be the Emergency Disaster Rescue (RED) Training Center in Pasig City, where the large-scale exercise will be conducted.
