1.8 magnitude earthquake in Montgomery

Monday night's earthquake in Montgomery County measuring 1.8 on the Richter scale shook residents as far away as Colombia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the city of Spencerville. The quake was felt in the surrounding area before 11:30 p.m. Monday, according to the US Geological Survey. Its effects were felt in Hickory Ridge and Columbia, according to people living in the area and posting on Reddit and other social media sites.

Many reported hearing a loud bang, as if something had hit a house or fallen, according to a few neighbors in Hickory Ridge. The 5.9-kilometre-deep quake is one of three to hit Maryland so far this year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Howard County Police received about 10 calls reporting a loud noise along the intersection of Route 29 and Route 32 Monday night, according to a department spokesperson. The spokesman said officers checked the area and did not determine the cause of the noise, and police are not aware of any effects of the earthquake on Howard County.

Despite the quake's low rating on the Richter scale, which measures the strength of earthquakes, it could also be detected in Wilmington, Delaware and Washington, according to the US Geological Survey.
