Poughkeepsie residents wake up to the earthquake

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 26, 2024, the Town of Poughkeepsie community was awakened by a loud explosion and a shaking sensation.

I have family in the area and I received two text messages around 3:15 AM asking “Did you feel that vibration?!” At around 6 a.m., there were no official reports of what happened, but local Facebook groups began speculating.

“Did you hear an explosion?” is a common question in these groups, so many responses were sarcastically responding to the question with answers like “Well, yesterday was taco Tuesday” or “That's right, I flipped.”

Many also thought the quake might have been related to a rock quarry in the area, but this idea was shot down as many community members made it clear they would not be blasting rocks at 3 a.m.

Although it was funny, it didn't help those who were interested in what really happened. Several hours later, the official news came from the US Geological Survey.

2.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Poughkeepsie

The U.S. Geological Survey has officially reported a 2.1 magnitude earthquake in the town of Poughkeepsie. More specifically, the Crown Heights section of the town of Poughkeepsie, which is located behind the Poughkeepsie Galleria.

Dutchess County Emergency Management wrote:

At 3:02 a.m. this morning, the USGS reported a minor seismic event, measuring 2.1 on the Richter scale, originating from the Town of Poughkeepsie between Chevy Road and Camelot Road.

Earlier this year, the entire East Coast was shaken after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded with its epicenter in Tewksbury, New Jersey. The quake was so powerful that it was felt in Maryland, across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The US Geological Survey told NBC News that the April 5 quake was felt by “42 million people within 200 miles of the epicenter who may have felt shaking,” making it the fourth-largest felt earthquake in New York City's history.
