During 2012, Nagaland and the rest of the northeastern region witnessed countless earthquakes one after another. Perhaps we will see more of these earthquakes if the past trend is any indication. But what should raise concern is the strength of the recent earthquake, which measured 5.9 on the Richter scale. This is by no means a small matter, and its size does not seem to diminish but to grow stronger over time. Does it also mean that the northeastern region, including Nagaland, is preparing for a major earthquake? Not only scientists, but even ordinary people spoke of a major earthquake hitting the region. Our region is a region with history and one of the largest earthquakes in history was recorded in June 1897 in Assam. Another earthquake occurred in 1950, measuring 8.6 on the Richter scale. Perhaps many of our sheikhs have gone through this. A recent study by scientists warned of more major earthquakes – with a magnitude of 8 to 8.5 – in the Himalayas. They go on to say that the presence of such devastating earthquakes in the past means that earthquakes of the same magnitude could occur again in the region in the future.

The point is not to create a doomsday scenario or panic among us, but how can we be better prepared if such disasters ever strike us. No one can predict natural disasters and there is no point in dwelling on such fears but there is a point in thinking about the state of our disaster management system and how adequate it is to meet any requirements. Now, what have our governments done to prepare people for such disasters like floods, landslides, earthquakes, disease outbreaks etc. Also, what should our elected representatives say about preventing future disasters? Because it is an unfashionable issue, disaster management is unlikely to come up during an election period. No political party will mention it in their manifestos because they may feel it will not buy them the votes they need to win. Perhaps this speaks to a collective failure to understand that this is in fact a matter of life and death. What could be more important?

Disaster management is not limited to natural disasters only, but also includes earthquakes and landslides, but also includes incidents such as forest fires, deadly epidemics, road accidents, etc. Although it is not possible to predict and prevent all natural disasters, a state of preparedness and rapid response capacity can greatly mitigate the loss of life and property and human suffering and return life to normal as soon as possible. It is therefore important to formulate an action plan to deal with emergencies that arise following natural disasters or accidents, and to update it periodically. There has been an earthquake and this event has made some news not only in Nagaland but outside. It is true that there were no human losses or damage, but in any case the relevant authority should have at least provided an update. We should not become complacent and believe that no harm has been done and that the next earthquake will come and go without causing us any harm. The need for preparedness must be emphasized.
