7.2 magnitude earthquake hits southern Peru

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Peru early on June 28. Authorities say there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at 12:36 a.m. (0536 GMT). The epicenter of the quake was in the Pacific Ocean, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) west of Atiquipa, in Karavelli District. This is located about 380 miles south of the capital, Lima, near the borders with Chile and Bolivia. The depth was 17 miles (28 kilometers).

Local media reported that residents of areas near Ayacucho, Ica and the capital felt the quake. Eder Alca, mayor of the Sancos district in Ayacucho, told local radio station RPP that a road in his area had been hit by rockslides that cut off roads in several areas.

The Peruvian Navy's Department of Oceanography and Navigation reported that the quake triggered a tsunami warning along the Peruvian coast. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu said any tsunami threat had already passed.

Earthquakes are common in Peru, as the country lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
