Bangkok Post – 7.0 magnitude earthquake hits Peru

No damage was reported but no deaths were reported, and the tsunami warning was cancelled.

LIMA – A strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the coast in the Arequipa region of southern Peru on Friday, local officials said, adding that no deaths had been reported.

David Oponte, head of disaster risk management and national defense at the Ministry of Health, told local radio station RBB that only three minor infections had been reported so far.

Following the earthquake, Arequipa was hit by four aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4 to 4.6, causing some landslides on local roads.

The government said on social media that it was monitoring the situation to assess the damage and “determine what actions to take.”

The US National Tsunami Warning Center said that there is a threat of a tsunami as a result of the earthquake, adding that waves ranging in height from one to three meters above tide level were recorded along some parts of the Peruvian coast.

But Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen said the tsunami warning for the coast of Arequipa had been lifted.

Carlos Zanabria, an advisor to the regional government in Arequipa, told RBB that material damage had been reported in some areas, and residents had left their homes in fear, but he had not heard any reports of deaths or injuries.

Flavio Aranguren, mayor of the Yauca district in Arequipa's Caravelle department, told RPP that some walls of houses in the area collapsed. He added that no deaths were reported.

Small artisanal gold mines operate in Yauca and other nearby towns near the coast, but there is no information yet on any impact.

Ricardo Guillén, a representative of the National Emergency Operations Center, said that there were outages in electricity and telephone lines in areas close to the epicenter.

Ecuador and Peru form part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a wide area surrounding the Pacific Ocean where frequent collisions between continental plates occur.
