A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Arequipa in southern Peru on Friday, Reuters reported, citing local officials. No deaths have been reported so far, but eight people were injured. David Aponte, head of the health ministry’s disaster risk and national defense management, initially reported three minor injuries to local radio station RPP. The health ministry later confirmed that five other people were treated in nearby hospitals.

Following the quake, Arequipa experienced four aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4 to 4.6 on the Richter scale, causing some landslides on local roads. The government said on social media that it was actively monitoring the situation to assess the damage and determine the necessary measures.

Initially, the US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning, indicating waves between one and three meters above tide level along parts of the Peruvian coast. However, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen later confirmed that the tsunami warning for the Arequipa coast had been lifted.

Carlos Zanabria, advisor to the regional government in Arequipa, said that material damage occurred in some areas, noting that residents evacuated their homes out of fear, although no deaths or injuries were reported.

Flavio Aranguren, mayor of the Yauca district in the Caravelle department of Arequipa, told RPP that some walls of houses collapsed but confirmed that there were no deaths.

Yauka and nearby towns, where small artisanal gold mines operate, did not report any impact from the quake.

Ricardo Guillén, a representative of the National Emergency Operations Center, noted that there were power and telephone outages near the epicenter.

Ecuador and Peru are located within the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent seismic activity due to the collision of continental plates.
