An earthquake leaves thousands of Peruvians without electricity

Peru is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where more than 80 percent of the world's seismic activity occurs.

In the early hours of Friday, an earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale caused a power outage in the Arequipa region in southern Peru. Fortunately, only 9 people sustained minor injuries.

A representative of the Civil Defense in Arequipa reported that nine people with minor injuries received treatment in Ministry of Health hospitals and have already been discharged.

The damage to the homes was not serious. So far, the authorities have only recorded the collapse of some walls in the cities of Chincha and Yuca, which are close to the epicenter of the earthquake. Although one of the bridges was affected by the earthquake, residents use alternative routes to travel between the regions.

The damage report also included power outages for more than 3,500 users in Chincha, restricted sections of highways, and the suspension of classes in Caravelle province.

The text reads: “The Prime Minister of Peru announced that the earthquake caused damage but no casualties.”

The Peruvian Navy issued a tsunami warning immediately after the earthquake. But at 4:46 a.m., the warning was canceled because no dangerous waves had formed.

“The entire cabinet is on alert to help those affected. We hope that no casualties will emerge from the aftershocks,” said President Dina Boluarte, who is on an official visit to China.

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Yauca at 12:36 a.m. local time. Peru is located in an area known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, where more than 80 percent of the world's seismic activity occurs.

The country's last devastating earthquake occurred off the coastal city of Pisco in August 2007, when a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck that area and the entire southern region of Ica, resulting in more than 500 deaths and millions in damage to infrastructure and housing.
