Tsunami warning canceled after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Peru

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Peru early Friday morning, but authorities lifted a possible tsunami warning a few hours later.

The US Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was five miles west of Atacuiba, a region in southern Peru, and about 375 miles south of the capital, Lima.

The earthquake occurred at 12:36 a.m. local time at a depth of 17 miles below the surface. A series of at least three earthquakes were recorded following the initial earthquake.

Residents of the area reported feeling tremors in their homes and ran out into the streets. A video clip on social media showed lampposts and utilities shaking.

The authorities said that the earthquake did not result in any deaths, while only eight people were reported injured.

Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen told Peru-based Spanish-language radio RPP that the country was still assessing potential damage to infrastructure.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte is currently visiting Beijing to visit Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a warning of possible tsunami waves ranging from 3 to 10 feet, but later canceled the warning.
