A 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Peru left 14 injured

Five of the injured are from the Yauca region, one from Atikipa and eight from Acari.

The Regional Center for Emergency Operations (COER) in Arequipa Province in Peru confirmed on Friday that the number of people injured by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred in that region had risen to 14 people.

In this regard, it was reported that five of the injured belong to the Yauca region, one from Aticoipa, and eight from Acari.

In statements he made to local media, Arequipa Governor Rohel Sanchez confirmed that “all the people have been demobilized, and they received very minor injuries due to the same movement.”

Fourteen homes were also reported damaged, six in Yauca, three in Cahuacho, three in Acari and two in Bella Unión. “None of the homes need demolition. It's minor damage compared to that,” Sanchez said.

Regarding road infrastructure, two bridges were affected, one in Chala and the other in Huanuhuano; while six educational institutions were damaged by cracks, two in Yauca, and the same number in Jaqui and Pila Unión.

In Jaqui, the drinking water network was affected by 20 percent; In contrast, Hurricanes Atiquipa and Lumose damaged electrical service, and 0.4 km of roads were damaged in Caravelli, Chaparra, Huanohuano, Jackie and Acari.

In Atiquipa, there was a 100% power outage, as was the case in the Lomas area. As for the rest of the regions, we can say that communication methods, for example, are working 100%. The governor of the region added that this inventory of the antiquities that we uncover is not of high risk, but rather slight.

For its part, COER noted the presence of advanced warehouses in Akari, Karavelli, Atiku and Koikasa districts with sufficient supplies to cover the needs of the population.

The earthquake occurred at 12:36 (local time) 54 kilometers southwest of Yauca, in Caravelle, located in Arequipa province.
