A 3.4-magnitude earthquake has struck upstate New York just months after the city was hit by tremors.

An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale struck New York City on Friday evening.

The earthquake was felt throughout Jefferson County.

Lake Ontario was the epicenter of the earthquake, located about nine miles outside Henderson in Jefferson County and 50 miles north of Syracuse.

The earthquake occurred at 11:45 p.m. on Friday, June 28, at a depth of 10.0 km.

Residents of parts of Canada, as well as central and northern New York, felt the earthquake's tremors.

CBS affiliate WIVB reported that many residents reported feeling an earthquake but thought it was thunder.

Officials confirmed that there were no casualties during the earthquake.

Last April, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck the same area, centered on land in Adams Township, Jefferson County.

Following the recent earthquake, dozens of aftershocks could be felt in the surrounding area.

Last Wednesday, an earthquake struck the Poughkeepsie area, 200 miles south of Jefferson County.

The 2.1 magnitude earthquake shook the area slightly, but no damage was reported, according to CW affiliate WPIX-TV.

However, these two earthquakes pale in comparison to the last earthquake that struck the tri-state area in April.

New York, a state not accustomed to strong earthquakes, was hit by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake.

Gladstone, New Jersey, a town about 40 miles outside New York City, was the epicenter of the stunning earthquake.

Those living in the Tri-State area felt the world around them tremble, and they didn't know what to do with it.

New Yorkers were shocked when they felt the quake, and more than 120,000 residents posted in a USGS survey “Did you feel it?” forum.

The April earthquake was the largest in the region in more than 140 years, with an estimated 42 million people reported to have felt its effects and numerous aftershocks that followed.

Even those living in Washington, D.C., reported being able to feel the shocks.

The 4.8-magnitude earthquake comes in fourth place behind two 5.2-magnitude earthquakes that struck the region in 1884 and 1737.

The third largest earthquake ever reported in the tri-state area was a magnitude 4.9 in 1783.
