Big Island Volcano Hit by More Than 300 Earthquakes in Past 24 Hours: Kauai Now

More than 300 earthquakes have been recorded in the past 24 hours below the summit of Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island, most of them below the southern caldera at depths ranging from 1 to 1.8 miles.

The volcano did not erupt, but the number of earthquakes at the summit increased as part of a seismic swarm that began on the afternoon of June 27 with earthquakes of magnitude 2.9 and 3.4.

The 300 earthquakes that occurred over the past day are more than three times the rate of earthquakes several days ago.

Inflation in the crest and upper rift area remains moderately high, which has been persistent since the end of the short-lived eruption on June 3.

Inflation remains around the top, but rates have slowed.

Inclinometers at Uēkahuna northwest of the summit and Sand Hill southwest of the summit recorded approximately 1 microradian of net inflation over the past 24 hours.

The latest measurement of sulfur dioxide emissions at the summit was about 75 tons per day on June 28.

Any significant increase in seismic activity and/or deformation could lead to a new eruption within or near the summit area, but there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time.

Since the June 3 eruption, magma has been repressuring the storage system beneath Halema'uma'u and the volcano's southern caldera, triggering earthquakes in the upper East Rift Zone and in the caldera south of Halema'uma'u.

It is not possible to say whether this increase in activity at Kilauea will lead to an intrusion or eruption in the near future, or whether it will simply continue as seismic disturbances.

Changes in the nature and location of disorders can occur quickly.

Earthquake activity and ground deformation in the Middle and Lower East Fault Zone and Lower Southwest Fault Zone remain low.

Recent eruptions and ongoing unrest have been limited to the summit and upper rift zone. Measurements from continuous gas monitoring stations downwind of Puʻuʻōʻō in the Middle East Rift Zone—site of the 1983–2018 eruption—remain below detection limits for sulfur dioxide, indicating that emissions are negligible.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to closely monitor Kilauea Volcano and provide daily updates on the status of the volcano.
