Los Angeles Galaxy claim fourth straight win with win over San Jose Earthquakes

STANFORD, Calif. (AFP) – Joseph Paintsil scored in the first half and Los Angeles added two late in the second as the Galaxy beat the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0 on Saturday night for their fourth straight win.

Paintsil scored on an assist from Gabriel Beck in the 37th minute and the Galaxy took a 1-0 lead into the first half.

In the second half, Dejan Jovellić scored the winner in the 72nd minute with a header after Riqui Puig's shot rebounded off the crossbar. Mauricio Cuevas wrapped up the scoring with a stoppage-time goal. It was his first MLS goal.

Los Angeles had seven shots on goal to San Jose's six. The Earthquakes led 18-14 in total shots. John McCarthy had six stops for the Galaxy and William Yarbruff had four stops for San Jose.

The Galaxy remain tied for first place in the Western Conference. Both LAFC (12-4-4) and Galaxy (11-3-7) have 40 points. Real Salt Lake (10-3-7) is off until Wednesday and remains at 37 points.

Saturday's match marked the 101st edition in all competitions of the Clasico California between the Galaxy and the Earthquakes, with Los Angeles now leading the historic series 49-33-19 (166 goals, 142 goals). Against San Jose, Los Angeles holds a 40-28-17 record in league play, a 4-1-1 record in the US Open Lamar Hunt Cup and a 5-4-1 record in the MLS Cup playoffs.

The Earthquakes (3-15-2) travel to play St. Louis City on Wednesday. The Galaxy return home to host rival Los Angeles FC in a holiday clash on Thursday.
