Earthquakes' attack suffers in California Clásico loss to LA Galaxy

STANFORD – Ian Russell's first game as coach of the San Jose Earthquakes ended similarly to Lucie Gonzalez's last: a loss to Los Angeles.

Despite creating scoring chances, the Quakes were unable to score as they fell to rival LA Galaxy 3-0 in the 101st California Clásico at Stanford Stadium on Saturday night.

The Quakes outscored the Galaxy 17-14, had six goals on goal and an expected goals average of 1.9, but failed to put a goal on the board.

“It's been a common theme, we don't finish games when we need to,” Russell said after the match. “We've conceded goals at inopportune moments like the one tonight. I thought we created enough chances to at least be in this game. But the result doesn't look like like that”.

San Jose started the game with a high-pressure defense, something Russell emphasized in practices leading up to Saturday.

The plan worked from the start as the Quakes were able to turn defense into offense, but San Jose couldn't finish the game when they were in a position to score.

In the 22nd minute, Galaxy midfielder Mark Delgado received a yellow card after committing a violent foul on Amahl Pellegrino. In the ensuing free kick, Christian Espinosa passed the ball to Daniel Mooney near the penalty area, but Mooney's header passed through the hands of Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy.

Later in the first half, Espinosa found a cutting Jackson Yueale near the right side of the penalty area, then fired an open shot to Jeremy Ebobisse in front of goal. Ebobisse appeared to have a clear shot on goal, but he missed the pass and his shot went over the goal post and went out of bounds.

Ebobisse's struggles continued in the 37th minute. On a corner kick, the ball bounced off a Galaxy defender and landed on the 27-year-old striker's foot. But when Ebobisse tried to clear the ball, he slipped and allowed Galaxy a break.

Speeding down the field, Galaxy striker Gabriel Beck found Josef Paintsil who fired a left-footed shot that deflected into the bottom left corner for his sixth goal of the season and put the Galaxy up 1–0 going into halftime.

San Jose had nine shots in the first half, three of which were on goal.

“I think if we put some of it in there early, it would be a different game,” Yueill said. “It's something we still have to work on, and it's something we've lacked this year. Scoring goals in important moments.”

The Quakes' attacking woes continued in the second half, and with Ebobisse struggling, coach Ian Russell substituted former Galaxy striker Preston Good in the 60th minute.

Just a minute after coming on, Good found himself in a one-on-one with McCarthy after Benjamin Kikanovic found him running down the right side of the pitch. Good took an easy shot from the right side of the penalty area, but his right-footed shot went wide.

The crowd of 40,844 let out a sigh as the energy seemed to have been drained from the stadium by the missed opportunity.

“If I finish that chance, the game could change,” Russell said.

Los Angeles' dagger came in the 72nd minute.

Midfielder Riqui Puig, who came into the game in the second half after being out of action for more than three weeks, found a clean look from outside the middle of the box. Puig's shot almost missed the crossbar.

After the ball bounced, Dejan Joveljic's header found its way into the net to seal the win for the Quakes, scoring his twelfth goal of the season.

Galaxy added another goal in the 90th minute after Mauricio Cuevas scored after a cross from Miki Yamane.

Russell's tenure as head coach didn't start with a win, but Yuill said he appreciates the change in voice on the sidelines.

“A lot of players have played with him, so we respect him a lot. He brings a calm energy, but he wants to press. He wants to play, he wants to be dynamic and win. So the players are keen to make an impact and make a difference this season,” he said.

With Saturday's loss, the Quakes' record dropped to 3 wins, 15 losses and 2 draws, and they have not won in their last nine matches, including five straight losses. The Galaxy notched their 40th win in the California Clasico, moving into second place in the Western Conference behind Los Angeles FC.

San Jose will travel abroad next week when they play St. Louis SC on July 3.
