A mild earthquake strikes parts of Gauteng Province

According to Volcano Discovery, a possible earthquake occurred near Johannesburg on Saturday just before 8:30 p.m.

No damage or injuries were reported after a 2.3-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Gauteng on Saturday.

The earthquake was felt in parts of Roodepoort, Soweto, Auckland Park, Naturina, Turfontein, Weltevreden Park, and other areas.

Council for Geosciences (CGS) spokesperson, Mahlatsi Mononela, confirmed the earthquake to The Citizen.

“We confirm that an earthquake measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale occurred at approximately 18:26 this evening in the south of Johannesburg. It was followed by an aftershock that was felt at least 3.9 kilometres from the epicentre and measured 1.6 on the Richter scale.”

The size is preliminary until the data is analyzed, Mononella said.

“Our seismologists will analyze the data from seismic monitoring stations tomorrow (Sunday).”

Johannesburg Emergency Services said no major accidents or injuries have been reported at this stage.

Cape Town earthquake

In March, Cape Town was hit by a mild earthquake.

The Earth Sciences Council, which monitors seismic wave activities across the country, said the quake struck shortly before 6 p.m.
