Japan's Noto City Still Reeling From January 1st Earthquake

Tokyo (Jiji Press) – People on Japan's Noto Peninsula are still struggling in the wake of the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the area six months ago.

The January 1 earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture killed 281 people, damaged 83,980 homes, and forced up to 34,000 people to evacuate their homes.

The number of evacuees dropped to 2,288 as of Thursday, and shelters are gradually shrinking. The water outage has been resolved, except for about 1,500 homes in mountainous areas where there is a risk of landslides.

Construction of temporary housing has progressed, and about 17,000 people have moved into temporary homes, including existing apartments rented by local governments. The Ishikawa Prefectural Government aims to complete about 6,800 homes by the end of August, which were submitted by municipalities.

The process of demolishing collapsed homes at state expense did not make any progress. More than 18,000 homes out of about 20,000 homes whose demolition requests were accepted have not yet been dismantled.

The population outflow has been severe in the province, especially among younger generations. In four municipalities in the Oconoto region that were hard hit by the quake, the population dropped by 2,600 people in the four months after the quake, three times the number in the same period last year.

In Okonoto District, the elderly accounted for about 50% of the total population as of April, meaning local governments have to step up efforts to prevent them from dying alone.

The local government and municipalities will use about 54 billion yen in reconstruction funds created using government tax grants to provide support to those affected by the earthquake.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
