An earthquake hits the eastern end of Lake Ontario on June 28 | News

The Lake Ontario earthquake struck late Friday night, and was “one of the largest events recently recorded in the region,” according to Claire Berry, a research seismologist with the Canadian Hazards Information Service.

The incident occurred just before midnight Friday at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, on the U.S. side, “about 45 kilometers southwest of Watertown, New York.”

She gave the quake's measurement as 4, but added that “this is the Notley scale (as opposed to the more famous Richter scale), which is the magnitude scale we generally use for smaller events in eastern Canada.”

Asked if she felt it, she said: “Yes – the (Friday) night earthquake was widely felt across New York State (she gave this location) and in Canada, along the north shore of Lake Ontario and north, as well as in eastern Ontario – Kingston, Ottawa, Brockville (gave this location).”

Lifting fog reveals a sailboat on Lake Ontario near Prince of Wales Park in Etobicoke. The late Friday quake on the eastern end of Lake Ontario was felt on shore, but it could not have generated any large waves that would have been observed, other than by sensitive tide gauge instruments.

In an email interview, Perry said it wouldn't have made noticeable waves.

Some of the seismic energy can spread through the water, creating small water waves that can be detected by tide gauges.

“Since the fault (which occurred on June 28) occurred at a depth (about 10 km) and would not have propagated to the surface due to such a small earthquake, no significant displacement of the lake bottom is expected, and thus a tsunami will not occur.”

Last year, on April 23, it noted that “a 4.5 magnitude (Notley scale) earthquake struck southwest of Watertown, New York, about 20 kilometers northwest of (Friday night’s) earthquake.”

The area where Friday night's quake occurred “is generally a low to moderate seismicity zone, and over the past 30 years, earthquakes of magnitude 2 to 3 or magnitude 2.5 or greater on average have been recorded in the southern Great Lakes region,” he said.

She said three moderate-sized Magnitude 5 events occurred in our region, all south of the U.S. Great Lakes, including:

1929, near Attica, New York 1986, near Cleveland, Ohio 1998, near the Pennsylvania-Ohio border.

“These three earthquakes were widely felt in southern Ontario but did not cause any damage in Ontario,” she said.

As for the earthquakes centered in southern Ontario, she said the four largest were:

April 27, 1954, 4.1 degrees, eight kilometers northwest of St. Catharines. July 22, 1958, 4.3 degrees, 20 km east of Welland. April 20, 2005 Magnitude 4.3 was felt in Owen Sound, Parry Sound area. April 20, 2018, magnitude 4.1, seven kilometers east of Amherstburg.
