Early earthquake in Avonsley

An earthquake originating from Avonsley was felt as far away as Pakenham early on the morning of Monday 1 July.

Lead seismologist Dr Jonathan Bathgate of the Australian Institute of Geosciences said the quake was relatively small and “fairly weak”, and attributed the timing of the quake to people not feeling it at all.

“It is not common for this level of magnitude to be reported and the early morning time frame was timely,” he said.

A 1.4 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 5 kilometers was recorded at 03.55am, and residents around Cockatoo and even Warburton took to social media to inquire about the noise caused by the quake.

Some residents said the quake sounded like a loud bang, while others thought it was a small explosion – and still others slept soundly.

117 reports have been submitted to the Geoscience Australia website and the organisation monitors the most seismically active areas, to be alert to patterns of activity ahead of larger events.

Dr Bathgate said the Avonsley earthquake epicentre had not had a major quake for about 10 years.

“In the past 10 years, the average number of earthquakes reported in this area has been 16 at the beginning of July,” he said.

“The largest earthquake was a 3.3 magnitude one in 2014.”
