Unrest Escalates at Kilauea; More Than 500 Earthquakes Shake Upper East Rift Zone: Big Island Now

More than 500 earthquakes have struck Kilauea Island, located below the volcano's upper East Rift Zone — just southeast of the summit area — in the past 24 hours, as unrest continues to grow linked to a seismic swarm that began June 27.

But there are no signs of an imminent eruption.

Early this morning, seismic activity on Kilauea's upper East Rift Zone, just down the road from the crater chain in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, intensified further.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported in its Kīlauea Status Report at 1:43 a.m. today that earthquake rates had peaked at about 30 per hour by about midnight, with most of them centered in the area between Puhimau Crater and the Helena Pali Trail intersection at depths of 1 to 1.8 miles and extending north toward Keanakākoʻi Crater and south to Pauahi Crater.

The largest of these earthquakes were four magnitude 3.0 events near the intersection of the Crater Chain Road and the Helena-Pali Road in Hawaii Volcanus National Park, at depths similar to the rest of the swarm.

The Kilauea Earthquake Observatory's daily update at 8:24 a.m. said the seismic rate had decreased slightly to about 20 earthquakes per hour, representing increased disturbances compared to before June 27.

Long-term inflation has continued at Kilauea's summit and upper rift zone since the end of the short-lived eruption on June 3, but there has been no significant change in ground deformation associated with increased seismic activity.

However, the slowdown in the inflationary trend over the past few days has turned into a slight deflationary trend.

Magma has been repressuring the storage system beneath Halema'uma'u and the southern caldera since the June 3 eruption, causing earthquakes in the upper East Rift Zone and the caldera south of Halema'uma'u.

It is not possible to say whether the increase in activity will lead to another intrusion or eruption in the near future, or will continue in the form of seismic disturbances.

Previous eruptions and intrusions have occurred beneath the upper eastern rift zone near Pauahi Crater and Hiʻiaka Crater to the southeast and around the Luamanu and Keanakākoʻi craters on the caldera margin.

Volcanic eruptions occurred several times in the 1960s and 1970s in this area. The last one occurred during a single day in November 1979 in and near the Puahi Crater.

There is also no indication that the magma is moving towards the site of the June 3 eruption, southwest of the volcano's crater. However, changes in the nature and location of unrest at Kilauea may occur rapidly, as may the potential for eruption.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory will continue to provide daily Kīlauea updates.
