Scientists detect increased earthquakes around Kilauea

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Officials at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are closely monitoring Kilauea Volcano and its latest round of eruptions.

They say Kilauea never erupted.

However, we saw a sudden spike in the number of earthquakes over the weekend.

Activity was observed in the southeast area of ​​the summit, near the crater chain road between the Bohimau and Loamanu craters.

Park officials said the public can expect certain areas to be temporarily closed if the unrest continues.

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory recorded about 350 earthquakes over a 24-hour period. The largest was a magnitude 3.4 quake that was 1.2 miles deep.

In an update, park officials said:

“According to HVO, there are no signs of an imminent eruption, but any significant increase in seismic activity and/or deformation could trigger a new eruptive episode. Magma has been repressuring the storage system beneath Halema‘uma‘u following the short-lived eruption on June 3, 2024 near the Upper Southwest Rift Zone.”

In the event of an eruption, park officials and scientists will work with safety in mind, identifying safe areas that should remain open to the public.
