Kilauea volcano in Hawaii records 30 earthquakes per hour.. Is it about to explode?

Kilauea volcano was experiencing 30 earthquakes per hour, which is equivalent to 500 earthquakes over the weekend.

Despite this intense activity within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, geologists have not yet recorded an eruption at Kilauea.

Geologists with the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the upper east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano began experiencing a “seismic swarm” on the afternoon of June 27, with hundreds of earthquakes hitting.

The US Geological Survey reported that seismic activity increased at a rate of 30 events per hour.

More than 500 earthquakes were recorded between Saturday and Sunday, occurring under the Upper East Fault Zone and in surrounding areas.

After an escalation in seismic activity, it eased “slightly” Sunday morning, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS HVO).

“More than 300 earthquakes were recorded below the summit in the past 24 hours, most of them below the southern caldera at depths of 1.5 to 3 km (1-1.8 miles),” according to a public notice from the US Geological Survey.

“This number of earthquakes is more than three times the rate recorded several days ago, reflecting a seismic wave that began with two earthquakes measuring 2.9 and 3.4 on the Richter scale on the afternoon of June 27,” she added.

According to the USGS HVO, previous eruptions have occurred below the Upper East Rift Zone near the Paohe and Hi'aka craters.

“A significant increase in seismic activity and/or deformation could trigger a new eruptive episode, but there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time,” the USGS said.

Is Kilauea volcano about to erupt?

One of the world's most active volcanoes – Kilauea – has yet to erupt.

Its last eruption was on June 3, one mile south of Kilauea Caldera within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The eruptions stopped after several days. The area has not seen an eruption in nearly 50 years. However, so far, there is no indication that magma is moving toward the eruption site.

The increase in seismic activity indicates an imminent volcanic eruption, however, it is still difficult to predict when it will occur in the near future.
