The group helps reconstruct the geological timeline of the region using a series of innovative techniques used by structural geologists. They examine the sedimentary rock record, analyze seismic data, and determine when rocks in the mountains reached the Earth’s surface to determine how the mountains were formed and, in turn, identify faults associated with the seismic hazards associated with them.

McCaman-Loveland has already logged many hours of research in the Andes. Her graduate research advisor “took us on an amazing field trip” in 2014, and the people she works with keep her coming back. “The community is amazing,” she says. “The local scientists are some of the best in the world, and it’s a real honor to work with them and learn from them.”

“I’m really excited to bring students here,” she says, while she looks forward to helping solve the mystery of the Pae de Palo. The NSF grant funds a three-year project, which could include two or even three field seasons.

Students in Denison University’s Earth and Environmental Sciences program worked alongside a team of students and professors from the University of California, San Diego—co-investigators on a National Science Foundation grant. As the teams mapped and explored the area together, they built professional networks and gained field experience.

It wasn’t always so hard. McCaman Loveland made time for non-academic adventures. “We traveled and explored the San Juans—and I wanted to make it fun, too. We even threw in some goat farming.”
