4.4 magnitude earthquake strikes off Vancouver Island

The earthquake's epicenter was southwest of Tofino, Canada.

TOFINO, British Columbia — A 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded off Vancouver Island around 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The US Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was about 130 miles from the Canadian city of Tofino and at a depth of just over six miles.

There was one report of someone feeling shaky by 1:50 p.m.

Earthquakes near western Washington

Many earthquakes in and around Washington state are linked to the movement of the Juan de Fuca Plate and the North American continental plate against each other as the Juan de Fuca Plate slides beneath the North American continent, according to the National Seismological Network. This is called the Cascadia subduction zone.

According to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, earthquakes occur in Washington every day, but most are too small to be felt. The state is ranked second in the United States for a large, destructive earthquake because of its geological location.

The Pacific Northwest region typically experiences three types of earthquakes:

Shallow fault earthquakes: Cracks in faults in the upper part of the Earth’s crust at a depth of 18 miles. These earthquakes typically last 20 to 60 seconds and the shaking is localized to the area near the fault, according to the Department of Natural Resources. Deep fault earthquakes: Deep faults occur when two tectonic plates collide and one plate slides beneath the other. These earthquakes can affect a large area but are less intense. Subduction zone earthquakes: These earthquakes are caused by the tension of an oceanic plate sliding beneath a continental plate. When enough stress builds up, the fault ruptures, releasing a tremendous amount of energy. The Cascadia subduction zone has the potential for these types of earthquakes and has ruptured in the past. It is one of the biggest hazards in Washington state, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
