Researchers study highway risks in earthquake zones

Threats to America’s transportation infrastructure come from many sources—from aging to hurricanes, wildfires, and aging container ships. Now a research group is working to address another threat: soil “liquefaction.” Liquefaction occurs during an earthquake when intense shaking causes the soil to temporarily turn liquid, losing its ability to support roads and structures.

A team from the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), based in San Antonio, Texas, is now working to better understand where liquefaction is likely to occur and quantify its impacts. As part of a five-year contract with the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, the SwRI-led team will expand on previous work done for the Next Generation Liquefaction (NGL) project, a community-driven collaboration with an open-source database of earthquake and liquefaction history from around the world.

The Texas researchers will collaborate with scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles, and Oregon State University on the project. The team plans to update predictive models to better identify vulnerable areas and infrastructure, and determine whether costly mitigation strategies are needed to prevent serious damage in the event of an earthquake.

“That’s the goal — to improve public safety and provide the most useful, up-to-date tools for assessing earthquake-related risks on America’s roads, bridges and tunnels,” Kristen Ulmer, a principal research engineer at Southwest Research Institute and the project’s principal investigator, said in a statement.
