First Responders, Seismologists Reflect on What Happened 5 Years Later
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Eyewitness News continues its coverage of the Ridgecrest earthquake five years ago, which hit the desert communities of Kern hard. We’re looking at what first responders learned from that day. Also, what improvements have been made to earthquake detection technology?
“It was an interesting incident because it happened at a time of year when we were already very busy,” said Andrew Freeborn, public information officer for the Kern County Fire Department.
The Fourth of July is the busiest time of year for fire departments across the country. The same is true for Kern County, but in 2019, what was expected to be a busy day became even busier.

Freeborn said the department's resources and protocols were put to the test after 6.4 and 7.1 magnitude earthquakes struck Ridgecrest.
“The lesson learned for us is that the policies and training we put in place certainly worked,” Freeborn said.
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck on July 4, followed by a 7.1 magnitude quake on July 5. This is what’s called an “aftershock,” Caltech professor Allen Hosker told Eyewitness News. Unlike an aftershock, which occurs after a large earthquake, aftershocks are different. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, an aftershock is an earthquake that occurs before a larger earthquake in the same location.
This is true of the Ridgecrest earthquakes, where the M6.4 quake is considered a precursor to the M7.1 quake, Husker said. He was careful to emphasize that while they technically fall under the definition of a foreshock, these quakes are unique because they occurred in separate locations.
“Usually a foreshock occurs on the same fault, but in this case it wasn't on the same fault, it was almost perpendicular to the main fault,” Husker said.
According to Freeborn, this was the first time the administration had heard of this type of earthquake.
“All my life I always thought that after a big earthquake, there would be a number of smaller earthquakes,” Freeborn said.

Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
