Three earthquakes strike off Vancouver Island within hours of each other

Three relatively small earthquakes struck off the west coast of Vancouver Island on Thursday, over the course of just a few hours.

The first quake was recorded at about 6:18 a.m. about 149 kilometres west of Tofino, according to Earthquake Canada.

The earthquake was recorded at a magnitude of 4.3 at a depth of five kilometers.

About three hours later, a second, larger earthquake of magnitude 5.2 was recorded in the same area at about 9:15 a.m.

The second quake struck about 196 kilometres west of Tofino, also at a depth of five kilometres.

The third quake was recorded just before 10:45 a.m., 239 kilometers west of Tofino. The quake measured 4.1 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The recent earthquakes are “normal” for the Vancouver Island coast, says Andrew Schaefer, a seismologist and research scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada.

“There were several magnitude 3 and low to moderate magnitude 4 earthquakes yesterday, and we had more this morning, magnitude 4 and magnitude 5 earthquakes about an hour ago, and this is very normal in this area,” he said in an interview with CHEK News at around 10:15 a.m.

“These earthquakes occurred on the northern edge of the Juan de Fuca mountain range, which is very common as we see magnitude 4 and 5 earthquakes there fairly regularly.”

If we feel multiple magnitude 4 or 5 earthquakes, that means there are many other, less powerful earthquakes shaking at the same time, but they're not being detected, Schaefer says.

“It will be accompanied by many smaller earthquakes as well, too small to be detected by the ground networks we have, so it will be accompanied by many magnitude 2 earthquakes.”

He adds that although earthquakes have been recorded, there is no risk of damage from vibrations or tsunamis.

“These earthquakes spread out in a chain of ridges, so they generally do not cause tsunamis, and they are very shallow,” the seismologist said.

“So we usually don't experience any kind of damage, let alone feel it on Vancouver Island.”

The recent earthquakes have nothing to do with the Cascadia subduction zone, but they are a good reminder that Vancouver Island lies along a fault line and that “we have to be prepared,” Schaefer says.
