Earthquake survivor marries her savior

An earthquake survivor who was trapped under rubble following the Kahramanmaras earthquake that struck the country on February 6 has married the firefighter who freed her from the rubble.

Earthquakes that struck the country in 2023 killed more than 53,000 people in 11 southern provinces, affecting about 15 million people. As thousands of buildings collapsed in 7.7-magnitude tremors and later 7.6-magnitude tremors, rescue teams struggled for weeks through the rubble.

As one of the survivors who had the chance to get out alive from the devastating event, Sinem Kaynak decided to marry Gabriel Sarsilmaz, the man who made great efforts to save the young woman and her brother from the wreckage.

The couple expressed their feelings about the miraculous event they witnessed together.

“It's a feeling I can't describe. We ended up with a happy ending after this tragic event,” Sarsilmaz said.

Kaynak noted that life had made room for their union, saying: “We are sorry for the people we lost, as well as for all those who lost their lives. But life goes on, and now we are happy.”
