There was a plausible theory in the run-up to the general election that there might be a big change at national level but the change would be less dramatic here in the south-west.

Many of the Conservative MPs who had just lost their seats were optimistic about their prospects, and the sheer size of the majority in the Conservative Party was clearly a major obstacle to Labour or the Liberal Democrats.

In fact, the region has just witnessed its biggest electoral earthquake in a century.

Not only did Labour win the three seats it had sought, it went much further.

Caroline Voden is the new Liberal Democrat MP for South Devon, a seat that has been held by the Conservatives for over 100 years.

Similarly, Honiton, Sidmouth, Tiverton and Minehead were snatched from the safe Conservative seat of Tiverton and Honiton which the Liberal Democrats won stunningly in a by-election in 2022.

Add to that Newton Abbot, which the Conservatives lost to in 2010, and South Devon, which the Liberal Democrats have long coveted but never won – until now.

The Conservatives, who held all but three seats in the two counties just six weeks ago, now have just four seats – two of them narrowly won.

The election has just turned in a very amazing way.
