Earthquakes are not common in the northeastern United States, especially in New England. In April 2024, a rare occurrence occurred when a 4.8 magnitude earthquake centered in New Jersey struck late Friday morning, April 5, according to NBC Boston, and was felt between Virginia and the Massachusetts/New Hampshire state line.

A few hours later, people felt an aftershock measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale.

While no one discussed anything about the validity of the April 2024 earthquake, just a few years ago when it was felt in parts of Maine, conspiracy theorists took the ball and ran.

According to NECN, on December 9, 2020, two different earthquakes struck Maine, one with a magnitude of 2.4 and the other with a magnitude of 3.0 around the border between Maine and New Brunswick in Canada.

On the same day, according to USA Today, a plane crash involving a pilot and an F-16 fighter jet occurred in Michigan. So what does this have to do with Maine and the earthquake that struck near the border?

Conspiracy theory in Maine

According to Task & Purpose, a conspiracy theory has somehow emerged that the earthquake story was actually a cover-up, and that what actually happened was a bombing by 50,000 Chinese troops, who shot down the aforementioned F-16 fighter jet during their invasion of the United States, which was taking place through Maine.

Conspiracy theory rumors were quickly quashed by the Maine National Guard when Task & Purpose reached out for comment.

The Maine National Guard has no knowledge of such military movements or actions, and would undoubtedly have been notified through military or emergency management channels if such a major event occurred in Maine.
