Increased seismic activity continues under Mount St. Helens; 22 earthquakes this week

SKAMNIA COUNTY, Wash. (KPTV) – Mount St. Helens continues to see increased seismic activity, according to an update Friday from the Cascades Volcano Observatory.

Mount St. Helens has seen slightly higher seismic activity this year than in recent years, with 22 earthquakes in the past week alone, according to the observatory.

423 earthquakes have been recorded under the volcano since February 1.

The largest earthquake last week was 1.1 magnitude.

The largest earthquake in the area since February 1 was recorded at 2.0 magnitude.

The average depth of these earthquakes last week was 2.3 miles below the crater. That compares to an average depth of 3.8 miles since Feb. 1.

“Although this level of seismic activity is high compared to the past several years at Mount St. Helens, it is still considered background level and does not indicate an imminent eruption,” the observatory wrote Friday. “No changes in ground deformation, volcanic gas, or thermal emissions were detected at the volcano. Small earthquakes consistent with background level activity were also detected at Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, and Mount Hood.”

The USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory and the University of Washington's Pacific Northwest Seismic Network closely monitor volcanoes in Washington and Oregon 24 hours a day, every day.
