Lake Seli experienced a 3.9 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale on Friday morning.

Seeley Lake residents were delayed until the end of their Fourth of July holiday on Friday morning due to a 3.9 magnitude earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake's epicenter 14 miles northeast of Seeley Lake at about 4:45 a.m.

Vincent Chappell had just poured a cup of coffee and was sitting on the couch when he heard a sound like a huge semi-trailer truck carrying a large load coming down the highway through town.

“The next thing I know, the walls are shaking,” he said Friday. “It shook the house for maybe 10 seconds. But nothing serious.”

The roar of the truck woke his wife in the next room, but it didn't cause any alarm in the Chappelle home. After everyone stopped dancing, Chappelle heard the sound of a semi-trailer truck pulling away and heading toward the hills.

“It was kind of different, kind of fun,” Chappelle said with a laugh.

Chappell is also the director of the Seeley Lake Water District, and his thoughts turned to the district’s facilities after the shaking subsided. Water district employees typically monitor the charts after an earthquake to make sure the flow readings are consistent. A pipe installed in the 1960s tends to break in the weeks after a quake; this piece in particular came to mind.

Still, this was a fairly mild quake; a far different experience than the 5.8 magnitude quake in 2017 that was felt hundreds of miles from its epicenter in Lincoln. On Friday, the walls of Chapel shook, but nothing fell to the ground. There were no reports of damage by Friday afternoon. Residents in Missoula, Helena, Lincoln and Wolf Creek registered “weak” as the most intense response to the USGS’s “Did you feel that?” reporting system.

“I don't expect to see anything” damaged after Friday's earthquake, Chappell said.

The quake was 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, and originated in the Montour Creek area north of Ovando. The USGS recorded a second 2.5-magnitude quake about four minutes later.
