Six cruise ships cancel planned visits to Hualien this year after quake

Six of the nine international cruise ships scheduled to dock at Hualien Port this year have canceled their planned visits to Taiwan following a massive 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck off Hualien on April 3, the Hualien branch of Taiwan International Ports Corp. (TIPC) said Friday.

While the main structures of Hualien Port were not affected by the quake, the severe damage to the famous Taroko National Park has affected the willingness of international cruise ships to dock, said Lu Chanyu, an official with the Hualien Port Company.

Four cruise ships have docked at Hualien Port so far this year, the authority said, adding that it remains unclear whether the remaining ships scheduled to visit Hualien Port in October and December will dock as planned.

To increase the attractiveness of Hualien Port as a cruise ship destination after the earthquake, the company previously announced that from April 25 to December 31, passenger service and port area maintenance fees will be waived for international cruise ships docking at Hualien Port.

But these measures have not been successful so far.

As for other ports in Taiwan, TIPC data showed that Keelung Port is expected to receive 193 international cruise ship visits this year, about 65 percent of the 297 visits before the pandemic in 2019.

Moreover, about 30 international cruises are expected to arrive at Kaohsiung Port this year, exceeding the 29 visits recorded in 2019.
