4.4 magnitude earthquake hits Batang and Pekalongan provinces in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An earthquake shook residents of Batang and Pekalongan regency, as well as surrounding areas in Central Java, Indonesia, on Sunday afternoon, July 7, 2024. Data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.4 and was centered on the ground.

“This type of shallow earthquake is caused by an active fault,” Daryono, head of the Indonesian Meteorology and Climatology Agency's earthquake and tsunami center, said in a written statement after the quake.

The earthquake struck at 14:35 WIB, with the epicenter 5 km northeast of Batang and a depth of 6 km.

The tremor, which measured 3.0 on the Richter scale, was recorded in the Batang and Pekalongan areas, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department. That means the vibrations caused by the quake were similar to what you might feel on the ground from a passing truck. Residents of Kendal felt the same quake, but to a lesser degree.

However, the earthquake's tremors were reportedly able to damage several buildings in Batang, including the local Grand Mosque. “It was so strong that my roof was blown off, and I still feel dizzy (from the shaking) to this day,” said X account owner @xhtreee when responding to information about the Batang earthquake from BMKG.
