PM Orban: We have caused a political earthquake

The organization is a “vital pillar” of East-West cooperation, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Saturday at the informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States in the Azerbaijani city of Shusha.

Commenting on Hungary's current six-month presidency of the European Union, he said he saw it as a peace mission, pointing to his recent visits to Kyiv and Moscow.

He said the city of Shusha in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which returned to Azerbaijani control in November 2020, was encouraging from a peace standpoint for Hungary, a country he said had been living in the shadow of the Ukrainian war for two and a half years.

Orban expressed his appreciation to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for “restoring the possibility of peaceful life to hundreds of thousands of people in the Caucasus region.” He added: “We hope to find this path in Europe as well in the near future.”

Commenting on the European Parliament elections in June, he said they had caused a “political earthquake.” He added that people in 20 of the EU’s 27 member states had voted for change. He said some pro-war governments had failed or been significantly weakened.

The Patriots for Europe alliance, which will be formed on Monday, will be the third-strongest group in the European Parliament, he said.

Orban highlighted the risk of the world once again dividing into power blocs as a result of the war in Ukraine.

He said that given the sad experience of history, he prefers a future image based on the restoration of global cooperation and the unification of forces. He added: “As a result, we view the Organization of Turkic States as a vital pillar for maintaining cooperation between the East and the West.”
