Shaker Aamer was the last British in Guantanamo Bay. Speaking to the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire program, she described how she had been without trial for almost 14 years. Aamer claimed that for very serious claims – he led a Taliban unit and met Osama Bin Laden. He was classified as a threat by the US military, but was never charged. His lawyers claim that the case against him arose from unreliable allegations of torture and raises serious questions about the legality and morality of the so-called war on terror. A spokesman said the UK government "stands firm against torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment," the US Department of Defense said, "does not support detainee abuse. All credible allegations of abuse are thoroughly investigated, and when these allegations are substantiated proper disciplinary action is taken. "
