Hernan Lopez scored in the 49th minute to give the San Jose Earthquakes interim coach Ian Russell their first win of the season with a 1-0 win over the visiting Chicago Fire on Sunday night.

San Jose (4-16-2, 14 points) ended a nine-game winless streak (0-8-1). The team entered the game as the league's worst defensive team, conceding 56 goals, and the Earthquakes kept their first clean sheet of the year.

Lopez was the only attacking player to make an impact early in the second half. Cristian Espinoza sent him a great pass from midfield, and Lopez did the rest with his left foot, firing a powerful shot into the right corner of the net that went past Fire goalkeeper Chris Brady.
