In an opinion piece, Paul Galley of Riverkeeper described previous incidents in Indian Point as “major malfunctions”. However, none of these events, or other plant operations that it portrays as “safety issues,” have put the public at no risk.

The tritium levels measured in the test wells under the Indian Point did not represent the concentrations in the Hudson River or drinking water supply. The levels in and off the river are essentially undetectable. Moreover, federal regulators this year reported that bolts in all seven similar Westinghouse reactors – including Indian Point – have been replaced. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission decided that her condition did not warrant closure or pose a major safety concern. If it is serious about environmental justice, it will separate dirty fossil fuel stations in place of nuclear power.
