Roya News | Strong earthquake hits northern Philippines

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake killed at least three people in the northern Philippines on Wednesday, collapsing buildings and shaking high-rise buildings more than 300 kilometers (185 miles) away in the capital, Manila.

The shallow but strong quake struck the sparsely populated mountainous province of Abra on the main island of Luzon at 8:43 a.m. (0043 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage than deep earthquakes.

A 25-year-old construction worker in La Trinidad, capital of landlocked Benguet province, died when the three-story building he was working in collapsed, police said. Seven other workers escaped unhurt.

In the municipality of Dolores in Abra, which felt the force of the quake, people ran in panic out of their homes and shops, and windows of the local market were shattered, police Major Edwin Sergio told AFP.

“The earthquake was very strong,” Sergio said, adding that there were small cracks in the police station building.

“There was also chaos in the vegetables and fruits displayed in the market after the tables fell.”

A video posted on Facebook and verified by AFP showed cracks in the asphalt road and the ground in the nearby provincial capital of Bangued, though there was no visible damage to homes or shops.

Several wounded people in Bangued were taken to hospital, police commander Major Nazareno Emiya told AFP.

“Some of the buildings here are showing cracks, and the electricity and internet have been cut off,” he added.

The quake “caused damage to many families and businesses,” said Rep. Cheng Bernos, who represents the only district of Abra, but did not give details.

University student Mira Zapata was at home in the municipality of San Juan when she felt a “very strong tremor.”

“We started screaming and ran outside,” she said, as the aftershocks continued.

“Our house is fine but the houses down the hill were damaged.”
