Port Hedland earthquake: Pilbara city hit by small quake in early hours of Thursday morning

A series of earthquakes struck the Pilbara town of Port Hedland on Thursday, the latest just before 3pm.

According to Geoscience Australia, the city was first struck by a 3.1-magnitude earthquake at around 2:17 a.m.

The quake, which was only about 10 kilometres deep, struck less than 50 kilometres south of Port Hedland.

The Australian Geoscience Agency website indicates that 72 people have felt and reported the earthquake so far.

Those who reported the quake said they felt “moderate to light shaking.”

However, Geoscience Australia reports that two more earthquakes have been recorded near the city in the past few hours.

One of the earthquakes occurred at about 11:39 a.m.; the other was recorded at about 2:57 p.m.

The latest earthquake measured about 3.6 on the Richter scale.

Earlier on Thursday, Dr Hadi Ghasemi, a senior seismologist at Geoscience Australia, described the first quake, which struck at 2.17am, as a “small, shallow earthquake”.

“The incident occurred less than 50 kilometres south of Port Hedland, the epicentre of the event,” Dr Qasemi said.

“Most of the reports we have received have come from Port Hedland, and they all indicate a mild to moderate level of ground shaking, which is what we would expect from this size (earthquake).”

Dr. Qasemi said he was not aware of any reports of damage from the first earthquake.

Several earthquakes have affected Port Hedland over the years.

Last year, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck south of Pipingara, with many residents in South and Port Hedland reporting that their homes shook due to the natural phenomenon.

The last major earthquake in the area was on November 13, 2021, when a 5.3 magnitude quake struck 148 kilometres south of Port Hedland.
