The North Pacific Ocean is hit by a series of earthquakes, the largest of which measured 6.4 magnitude.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — A series of earthquakes struck the North Pacific Ocean near Vancouver Island in British Columbia on Thursday morning, the most powerful of which was a 6.4-magnitude quake.

The USGS said the first quake struck southwest of Tofino, Canada, at about 8:08 a.m. A USGS earthquake alert has been in effect since the magnitude 4 quake was reported.

The second quake was centered not far west of Tofino, Canada, at around 9:17 a.m. The second quake was reported to have a magnitude of 5.4 with a level 3 intensity.

The third quake struck at about 10:34 a.m. southwest of Port McNeill, Canada. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake's magnitude at 4.7 and its intensity at Level 1.

Most earthquakes are not felt by people because the shock waves do not reach the ground.

According to USGS maps, about 11 earthquakes have been reported in the North Pacific region in the past seven days. In the past 30 days, about 21 earthquakes have been reported in the same region.

The USGS uses the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) which measures how strong an earthquake is felt by humans. The scale ranges from level 1, which is not felt by humans, to level 10, which is considered intense.

An earthquake must reach a minimum intensity level for Shake Alert to be activated and send an alert. Alerts sent by the My Shake app and Google Android start with earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater.
