6.4 magnitude quake sparks tremor warnings in western Western Australia

The National Weather Service does not expect a tsunami threat, but some parts of western Washington received earthquake alerts as a result of the earthquake.

TOFINO, British Columbia — After a series of seismic activity off the coast of Vancouver Island last week, the largest earthquake in 2024 struck the area Thursday morning.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck about 120 miles southwest of Port Alice, British Columbia, shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It's the largest quake to hit the area in 2024 so far.

This comes after a series of smaller earthquakes were recorded in the same relative area of ​​the ocean off the coast of Vancouver Island. A Canadian geologist told KING 5 last week that the activity in the area was not out of the ordinary, with many of the quakes concentrated “near the junction of the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge, the Sovanco Fault Zone and the Nootka Fault Zone.”

Despite the severity of the earthquake, the National Meteorological Agency did not issue any tsunami warning for any of the coastal areas surrounding the earthquake zone.

The quake triggered a tremor warning for parts of the Olympic Peninsula and Puget Sound, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
