6.4-magnitude quake that struck British Columbia is part of a recent seismic 'swarm': agency

A series of four earthquakes, including a preliminary magnitude 6.4 quake, struck off the coast of Vancouver Island Thursday morning, part of an ongoing “swarm” of earthquakes being detected off the coast of British Columbia.

The first and largest quake struck at 8:08 a.m. Pacific time at a depth of 10 kilometers, 183 kilometers southwest of Port Alice, British Columbia, according to Earthquakes Canada.

The agency said no tsunami or damage was expected, but some Vancouver Island residents may have felt the quake.

The 6.4 magnitude quake was followed by another initially measured at 4.3 magnitude at 8:35 a.m. PDT, a 4.9 magnitude quake at 9:17 a.m. PDT, and a 4.8 magnitude quake at 10:34 a.m. PDT, all near the same location.

A total of 13 earthquakes with a preliminary magnitude of about 4.0 or greater have been recorded in British Columbia waters since the beginning of July.

A notice posted on Earthquakes Canada's website says the agency is tracking “a cluster of earthquakes off the coast of Vancouver Island, at the intersection of the northern Juan de Fuca Range, the Suvanku Fault Zone and the Nootka Fault Zone.”

In an interview with CBC News in Victoria after the quakes, Natural Resources Canada seismologist John Cassidy described the area as a “very complex tectonic environment.”

“We have plates moving apart, sliding over each other, and we actually have three major fault systems that intersect in the vicinity of these earthquakes,” he said. “Going back to the time period when we recorded the earthquakes, this is one of the most active areas in Canada.”

He said while there is no cause for concern about the current cluster of earthquakes posing a safety risk given their depth and distance from land, they are a reminder that British Columbia's coast is at risk if an earthquake strikes closer to shore.

“This sequence doesn't tell us when a major earthquake near Earth will occur, but it reminds us that we live in a very active region,” Cassidy said.

He added that current earthquakes also provide scientists with useful data that helps them better predict and understand future earthquakes.

“This earthquake … will be very useful to us in terms of understanding what we can expect from future events,” he said.
