OMSI Hosts Earthquake Preparedness Committee at Burnside Bridge

PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) – OMSI hosted the Burnside Bridge team responsible for redesigning the 98-year-old bridge.

The goal of the redesign is to strengthen the bridge so it can withstand an earthquake, something none of the bridges over the Willamette River in downtown Portland can handle.

A member of the redesign council expressed concerns about the impact of the construction on one of the city's most important landmarks, the skate park.

“So far, the whole project has done a really good job of integrating us because we literally have a seat at the table but it's still an issue, you know, it's going to be four or five years or more of displacement, so we just want to make sure we're included and have a design that will displace us as little as possible,” said one team member.

A poll to vote on the bridge redesign option will be available online on July 31.
