A long way to strengthen St Mary’s Church in Timaru

The final stage of the earthquake that strengthened St Mary’s Church in Timaru is running through as the building’s tower was reinforced.

Church warden, Murray Gibson, said the work began six weeks ago and involved strengthening the 32-meter-high steeple and placing a new concrete floor on top.

“The concrete floor will prevent it from twisting in the event of another earthquake,” Gibson said.

The tower was added in 1909, 23 years after the church was built.

The stone peaks 2 meters high were removed after the Canterbury earthquake in 2011 for safety reasons after one of the four stone blocks shattered to the ground causing the other three to be removed for safety reasons.

It will be replaced by concrete glass pieces.

Gibson wasn’t sure how long the work would take.

He said that an intact summit might be placed in the church’s front garden to preserve part of its history.

Besides the reinforcement, the restoration work that began in 1999 has continued and is also in its final stage.

Ray Bennett, head of the St Mary’s Church Restoration Trust, said the first and second phase of the restoration involved cleaning the stones of the tower and the saucer that had been completed before the earthquake.

The southern part of the stonework has yet to be done.

More than $ 1 million was spent on the restoration while the costs of the reinforcement works were paid for through an insurance claim.

“It’d be cool when that was done. We want it to be true for another 100 to 150 years,” Bennett said
