Dieppe, New Brunswick, home hit by tractor trailer

Two people were taken to hospital after a car accident in Dieppe on Saturday morning.

Dieppe Fire Department Platoon Chief Denis Roberge said a vehicle and a tractor-trailer collided around 5 a.m. at the intersection of Champlain Street and Aviation Street near the old airport.

“A car and a tractor-trailer crashed into the house, and the tractor-trailer was hit,” Roberge said.

Two people in the car were taken to the hospital with injuries that he believes were not life-threatening, Roberge said.

Two people inside the house were not injured.

Homeowner John Solner said he was in shock for hours after the incident.

“When I woke up, everything was on the ground. Everything had moved. I thought we were having an earthquake,” Saulnier said.

“I also thought it was an earthquake,” Saulnier said. “It's hard to put into words.”

Both the house and the truck sustained significant damage.

Saulnier said he was waiting to hear back from the Red Cross about assistance and accommodation.

The front end of the tractor-trailer was completely destroyed after the crash, Roberge said. (CTV/Derek Haggett) Calls like Saturday morning are rare, Roberge said.

“It's not something we come across very often. The age of the house has helped somewhat as it's an older building so the structure is a little bit stronger. So that probably allowed the occupants of the house to remain somewhat safe,” Roberge said.

The truck was towed from the scene around 8 a.m. and the RCMP left Kodiak shortly thereafter.
