Türkiye records more than 17,000 earthquakes in the first half of 2024

According to data published by disaster management specialist Bulent Ozmen, associate professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Gazi University, Turkey experienced about 17,343 earthquakes during the first six months of 2024.

In an interview with Anadolu Agency, Ozmen evaluated the earthquake data for the first half of the year, and pointed out that Turkey has nearly a thousand active faults capable of generating earthquakes, and ranks high among countries with high seismic activity.

He also mentioned that earthquakes occurring in Turkey and its surroundings are monitored day and night by 1,145 earthquake monitoring stations operated by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), and the information is recorded and then made available to users.

Ozmen stressed that the occurrence of earthquakes, their magnitude, locations, depths, latitudes and longitudes are determined and shared with the public, and the data is analyzed using statistical methods to predict the magnitude of possible earthquakes in the future and identify the areas in which they may occur.

These efforts contribute to the effective management of earthquake risks in Turkey, ensuring that all necessary measures are taken in a more organized and efficient manner.

He also reviewed the earthquake statistics for this year, noting that from January 1 to June 30, 2024, Turkey experienced a total of 17,343 earthquakes, including 94 earthquakes with a magnitude ranging between 4.0 and 4.9 degrees, and five earthquakes with a magnitude ranging between 5.0 and 5.9 degrees.

The specialist pointed out that the highest rate of earthquakes was in the months of January and February, as Turkey witnessed an average of 95 earthquakes per day during this period, and these earthquakes resulted in the death of one person and the injury of seven others.

The largest earthquake in the first half of the year was identified as the Sulusari-Tokat earthquake on April 18, with a magnitude of 5.6. This earthquake injured five people in Tokat and caused severe damage to 20 houses, two minarets and 283 buildings. Yozgat also saw damage with one building collapsing and 169 buildings damaged.

Evaluating the earthquakes by province, Dr. Ozmen pointed out that Malatya witnessed the highest number of earthquakes in the first half of 2024, with 3,078, followed by Kahramanmaraş with 2,599, Muğla with 1,153, Izmir with 1,000, Adıyaman with 814, and Çanakkale with 645.

Ozmen also recalled the earthquake summits held in 2003 and 2004 under the Ministry of Public Works and Localization, and last year under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, stressing the need for new strategies to reduce earthquake risks.

He stressed the importance of revisiting these strategies to address current issues and solutions, and proposed updates to Law No. 7269 of 1959, known as the “General Measures to be Taken in Case of Disasters Affecting Public Life,” to better align with contemporary disaster risk reduction efforts.
