Polish coal miner found alive more than two days after earthquake

WARSAW, Poland (AFP) – A miner who went missing after an earthquake struck the Ridoltowy coal mine in Poland has been found alive more than two days after the accident that killed one of his colleagues and injured 17 others, local officials said Saturday.

The miner was airlifted to hospital and the rescue operation was called off, said Witold Galacka of the coal mining group that runs the mine.

Earlier, the regional governor's office for the Silesian coal mining region in southern Poland said the miner was conscious and being taken to the surface.

“This is great news,” regional governor Marek Vujicic told TVN24.

Rescuers reached the 32-year-old miner at around 2 p.m. Saturday, said Leszek Pietraszek, the head of the Polish coal mining group that runs the mine. He was conscious and communicating, but had some breathing problems. He received first aid from a doctor who also prepared him to be taken to the surface.

Hundreds of rescuers were involved in the operation, sometimes having to pull out of the tunnel when the tremors threatened more or because of dangerous levels of methane gas. Authorities said rescuers had to dig through the rubble with their bare hands to reach the miner.

There were 78 miners in the area when a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck about 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) below the surface on Thursday afternoon.

A 41-year-old miner was killed and 17 others were hospitalized with injuries. Thirteen of the injured have since been released from hospital.

The quake caused rocks to be thrown into the passageway at one point, where the miner was found on Saturday.

The mining group has experienced several fatal accidents this year. In May, three miners died in a collapse at the Myslovice-Wisola mine, and a miner died in the same mine in April.

Two miners were killed in separate accidents in 2019 and 2020 at the Ridoltoy mine, which opened in 1792 and currently employs about 2,000 miners.

Coal mining is a hazardous industry in Poland, with some mines prone to methane explosions or collapses. Drilling in old mines requires digging deep into the ground to find coal, making the job even more dangerous. Last year, 15 miners lost their lives in accidents.
