Strange Earthquake Hits Northern Illinois, Felt by Hundreds

I have been following earthquakes for decades and I can't remember any earthquake hitting this part of Illinois. It was a strong enough earthquake that hundreds of people felt it and the USGS confirmed it.

According to the timestamp on the USGS website, this strange earthquake struck north-central Illinois southwest of Aurora, Illinois at about 2:53 a.m. Monday and registered a relatively strong magnitude of 3.4.

This is the current “felt map” shared by the USGS.

While this earthquake is stronger than most that have hit Illinois, it is not strong enough to cause any significant damage. I will be reaching out to the USGS and trying to get more information on why this part of Illinois is suddenly experiencing earthquakes strong enough to be felt and will update this story as soon as new information becomes available.

Update: All indications are that this earthquake was caused by the Sandwich Fault Zone in northern Illinois.
