Two turbulent nights in two days have caused extensive wind damage and at least two tornadoes in parts of Kane County and surrounding areas. According to the National Weather Service, an EF-0 tornado was confirmed in Elburn Sunday night and another was seen hitting the city of Sugar Grove near Route 88 and Route 47 Monday night. Wind speeds in excess of 70 mph were recorded at the airport in Sugar Grove and DuPage Airport west of Chicago. Trees and utility poles were snapped, knocking out power to thousands and blocking access to roads. Delnor Hospital lost power for a time Monday night, according to the Office of Emergency Management.

The Kane County Courthouse on Third Street and Wheeler Park in Geneva suffered tree damage, with branches scattered throughout the park. Similar damage was reported in Big Rock, North Aurora, Burlington, Maple Park, Lily Lake, South Elgin, Campton Hills and Algonquin. Several homes in St. Charles were damaged along with homes in Elburn. The Village of North Aurora posted on Facebook that the village had significant damage in an area south of Oak Street from Windstone Drive to Route 31.

The Kane County Office of Emergency Management will be assessing damage from the back-to-back storms. Emergency management personnel and volunteers, along with crews from the Kane County Department of Transportation, cleared roads and removed trees during the two-day storm.

Monday morning earthquake: Following a stormy evening, the USGS reported a small earthquake. The USGS recorded a magnitude 3.4 earthquake near Somonauk, Illinois, in DeKalb County. The quake struck at about 2:53 a.m. Monday. While no damage was reported, tremors were felt in parts of Montgomery and Aurora.

According to the USGS, at least two major earthquakes have occurred in Kane County:

• February 10, 2010: 3.8 magnitude earthquake, 2 km northwest of Lily Lake (Ken County)

• June 10, 2013: 2.6 magnitude earthquake, 4 km NE of Virgil (Kane County)
