Scientists Tour Big Island Volcano as Earthquake Numbers Slightly Increase: Big Island Now

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk inside a volcano?

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory need not wonder, they're doing just that this week.

With the help of a helicopter, scientists are updating a seismic monitoring station on the hardened black lava that covers the crater floor near Uialoha (Byron Ledge) on Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island.

They started their work on Monday and are expected to continue from 6am to 2pm today and Thursday.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park posted a photo on Facebook Monday morning of a helicopter delivering heavy equipment to scientists at the monitoring station.

The pilot was transporting equipment between Oialoha and the station below Wahnekapu (steam escarpment).

Brett Dalrymple summed it up simply in a response to the post: “Wow!”

“I want to go on that trip,” Patrick McBride said in response to the post.

The real question is, did these scientists, as they walked into the caldera, feel any of the earthquakes that still churn beneath the summit of the volcanoes and the upper East Rift Zone?

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported just before 9 a.m. today that over the past day, seismic activity has increased slightly below these two areas.

About 30 earthquakes were recorded below the summit and 97 below the Upper East Fault Zone, most at depths of up to 1.2 miles from the surface. That's compared to the previous day, when 27 earthquakes were recorded at the summit and 85 below the Upper East Fault Zone.

All earthquakes that struck the summit area and the upper East Fault Zone during the past day were less than 3 on the Richter scale.

Although the numbers are still fairly high as the unrest continues, all earthquake statistics over the past day and several weeks have been significantly lower than those recorded during the June 27 to July 1 period of earthquakes in the Upper East Rift Zone.

It has been several weeks of ups and downs under Kilauea since the short-lived eruption on June 3 in the Southwest Rift Zone.

The long-term gradual inflation of the summit and upper rift area also continued.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says significant increases in seismic activity and/or deformation could lead to a new eruption episode, but there are currently no signs of an imminent eruption.

Earthquake and ground deformation rates under the Central and Lower East Fault Zone and Lower Southwest Fault Zone remain low.

Recent volcanic activity and ongoing unrest have been confined to the summit area and upper rift zone.

Following the June 3 eruption, magma began to re-pressurize the storage system beneath Halema'uma'u and the southern caldera. This caused earthquakes in the caldera south of Halema'uma'u and in the upper East Rift Zone.

It is not possible at this time to say whether this activity will lead to an intrusion or volcanic eruption in the near future, or whether it will simply continue as seismic disturbances. Changes in the nature and location of disturbances can occur quickly – and a volcanic eruption can occur.

However, there are no indications of an imminent eruption at the moment.

The alert level for Kilauea remains at advisory.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to closely monitor Kilauea Volcano and will provide daily updates. Should there be a significant change in volcanic activity, a Volcanic Activity Notice will be issued.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
